It’s the role of a company’s business development staff to develop and implement strategies for turning products into profit. While numerous factors, such as market trends, sectors and competition, influence these strategies, at their core is the business development professional’s understanding of both the company’s science as well as market opportunities. A good Biz Dev person keeps their ear to the ground relying heavily on relationships. In addition to helping the company identify new markets and devising strategies for how to penetrate those markets, business development people work closely with marketing and public relations staff as well as market researchers to ensure that the sales teams have the tools they need to be successful.
